Paisajes: Landscapes by Frank McCulloch & Larry Smith

Frank McCulloch was born in 1930 in Gallup, NM of mixed heritage, including Irish and Hispanic roots. His father ran Harvey House Hotels in Gallup and in Las Vegas, NM, and he grew up in the Barelas neighborhood of Albuquerque. He received a BFA from UNM (1953) and master’s degrees from New Mexico Highlands (1955) and Instituto Allende, Mexico (1965). McCulloch taught art for 30 years and inspired thousands of students at Highland High School. His paintings hang in dozens of museums and corporate offices across the country, as well as in international collections from Italy to Mexico. Over the years he has received a number of awards and honors, including the Roswell Artist-in-Residence program (1978), the NM Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts (2001), and a PBS KNME Colores feature (2014). His work captures the color and light of New Mexico and reflects his connection to the landscape.

Larry LeRoy Smith was born in Clovis, NM. He knew from an early age that he wanted to be a painter and create art. He obtained his master’s degree from UNM in 1968. For 36 years Smith taught drawing, painting, photography, and filmmaking to Albuquerque Public School students and served as a mentor to many aspiring young artists, as well as to college students and adults through UNM courses. His work has been exhibited in shows around New Mexico and he currently has a studio at the Harwood Art Center. Smith believes that art is an instrument that reflects changes in ideas and thoughts. In his view, there is no good art or bad art, nor art that is right or wrong. Creative art at its best engages a deep involvement in life, living and learning.
