Emilie Bezzeg taught herself to make quilts for her family in the 1970s. Fascinated by black and white photographic images, which she says are “more truthful than color photography,” she began creating intricate monotone quilts based on old family photos. She experimented with translating the patterns, texture, and negative space of the photos into her fabric designs. Her attention has more recently focused on the colorful textural paintings of Vincent van Gogh, and she has been inspired by his works to create a series of quilts which she says “reflect my love for his art, for fabric, and for jigsaw puzzles.” She will also have some pieces inspired by Edward Hopper paintings. All of her quilts are created with hand-stitching; she cuts and layers the fabric in both appliqué and patchwork styles.
Emilie Bezzeg is a native of Tomé, New Mexico, and her heritage can be traced back hundreds of years in New Mexico through the Gutierrez family on her father’s side.
